Collector Corm

Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’ Pink Variegated Corm

Grow a striking jewel Alocasia from the beginning with a rare pink-variegated Black Velvet corm.

1 Corm

This listing is for one live corm only—not the mature plant pictured.

Jewel Alocasia

Black Velvet is prized for compact growth, thick leaves and a rich, velvety appearance.

Pink Variegated

A collector form that can produce blush pink, cream, pale green and dark green patterning.

Why Collectors Love It

Dark velvet foliage with high-contrast pink variegation.

Alocasia ‘Black Velvet’ is known for compact, sculptural leaves with a soft-looking surface and bold vein structure. The pink-variegated form adds warm blush and cream tones that create dramatic contrast against darker foliage.

As the plant matures, each leaf can develop a different balance of dark green, blush pink, cream and pale green. No two leaves are expected to look exactly alike.

Possible Foliage Colors

  • Deep forest green
  • Near-black green
  • Blush pink
  • Soft cream
  • Pale mint or green
  • Mixed marbling and sectoral patterns
  • Different patterns on each leaf

About This Collector Alocasia

A rare pink-variegated form of Alocasia Black Velvet.

Alocasia Black Velvet is a compact jewel Alocasia valued for its dramatic dark foliage, contrasting veins and dense, velvety-looking leaf surface. The pink-variegated form adds cream, blush and pale-green patterning that can appear as marbling, splashes or larger sectoral areas across the leaf.

Starting with an Alocasia Black Velvet Pink Variegated corm gives collectors the opportunity to grow the plant from its earliest stage and watch each new leaf develop its own pattern. Because every corm and every leaf can express differently, this is especially appealing to growers who enjoy rare Alocasia, variegated houseplants and unusual jewel Alocasia forms.

Important Variegation Disclosure

Variegation is naturally unpredictable.

This corm comes from a pink-variegated Black Velvet line, but the exact color, pattern and amount of variegation in the resulting plant cannot be guaranteed.

The corm may produce strong pink and cream variegation, balanced variegated foliage, lower-variegation growth or predominantly green leaves. Variegation can also change as the plant matures.

What You Will Receive

One carefully selected live corm.

Corms naturally vary in size, shape, exterior texture and stage of growth. Your corm may arrive dormant, beginning to root, showing a visible growth point or already beginning to sprout.

How to Start Your Corm

Warm. Humid. Moist—not waterlogged.

Place the corm in a clean propagation container using a lightly moist medium. Position the pointed growth end upward and nestle the lower portion into the medium while leaving the growth point exposed or only lightly covered.

Perlite +

Best for easy moisture control and airflow.

Rinse the perlite first, then place it into a clean cup and moisten it thoroughly. Nestle only the lower portion of the corm into the perlite with the growth point facing upward. Keep the perlite damp rather than flooded.

LECA +
LECA clay pebbles on black background

Great for semi-hydro propagation.

Rinse the LECA thoroughly and position the corm near the top of the clay pebbles. Keep a small water reservoir below the corm so moisture can wick upward while the corm itself stays above standing water.

Sphagnum Moss +
Sphagnum moss on black background

Excellent for steady humidity around the corm.

Soak the moss, then squeeze out excess water until it feels damp but not dripping. Loosely place it around the lower part of the corm and avoid packing wet moss tightly around it.

Fluval Stratum +
Dark porous propagation substrate on black background

Useful for consistent moisture in a small propagation cup.

Place moist Stratum into a clean cup and set the corm with the pointed growth end upward. Keep the lower portion in contact with the substrate without burying the corm too deeply.

Puddle Method +

Simple and easy to monitor.

Use only a very shallow amount of water at the bottom of a clean container. The base of the corm should have access to moisture while most of the corm and the growth point remain above the water.

Airy Aroid Mix +
Airy aroid propagation mix with Alocasia corm

A good option if you want to avoid a later substrate change.

Use a light mix with plenty of air space. Keep the growth point exposed and the mix lightly moist rather than wet.

Environment

Best Sprouting Conditions

  • Warm temperatures
  • Elevated humidity
  • Bright indirect light
  • Lightly moist media
  • Clean conditions
  • Gentle airflow

Avoid Rot

Do not keep it saturated.

Excessive moisture and stagnant conditions can increase the risk of rot. Some corms sprout quickly while others remain dormant for several weeks or longer. A firm corm may simply need more time.

Care After Sprouting

Move up slowly once roots and leaves develop.

Once the corm develops healthy roots and begins producing leaves, gradually transition it into a chunky, well-draining aroid substrate.

Potting mix or coco coir
Perlite or pumice
Fine orchid bark
Horticultural charcoal

Keep the young plant in bright indirect light. Pink, cream and pale tissue can be more sensitive to harsh direct sun. Maintain light, consistent moisture without allowing the root zone to remain waterlogged.

Color Notice

Color can shift as each leaf hardens.

New foliage may emerge with stronger pink, cream or pale tones and change as the leaf matures. Other leaves may appear darker green or show different variegation patterns.

The term Pink Variegated identifies the collector form. It does not guarantee visible pink variegation on every leaf.

Shipping & Live-Corm Notice

Every corm is living propagation material.

Your corm may arrive dormant, rooted or unrooted, beginning to sprout, showing a visible growth point, carrying dry outer layers or displaying minor natural discoloration.

Dry exterior material, small surface marks and natural differences in color or shape are not automatically signs of poor health. Open the package promptly and place the corm into appropriate propagation conditions.

Black Velvet Pink Variegated Corm FAQ

Common questions before you grow.

What is an Alocasia Black Velvet Pink Variegated corm? +
A corm is the underground storage structure from which a new Alocasia can grow. This listing is for one live Black Velvet Pink Variegated corm intended for propagation, not a mature potted plant.
Will my Black Velvet corm grow pink variegation? +
The corm comes from a pink-variegated line, but the amount and pattern of variegation cannot be guaranteed. New growth may show strong pink and cream color, lighter variegation or predominantly green foliage, and expression can change over time.
How long does an Alocasia corm take to sprout? +
Sprouting time varies with warmth, humidity, moisture, corm condition and growth stage. Some corms begin growing quickly while others remain dormant for several weeks before producing roots or a visible shoot.
What is the best way to grow a Black Velvet corm? +
Keep the corm warm, humid and lightly moist with the growth point facing upward. Perlite, LECA, sphagnum moss, Fluval Stratum, the puddle method or an airy aroid mix can all work when moisture and airflow are managed carefully.

Grow From the Beginning

Velvety. Variegated. Completely unique.

With patience and the right conditions, your corm may develop into a compact Black Velvet with dark green, cream and blush-pink foliage—each leaf revealing its own pattern.

What arrives: One live Alocasia corm unless the individual listing clearly states otherwise. Mature plant photos show the plant’s potential appearance as it grows.
What exactly am I buying?
A corm is the starter stage of the plant, not a mature plant. You receive the live corm described in the listing. Because these are living plants, corm size, sprouting speed, growth pattern, and mature appearance can naturally vary.
